ChatGPT and Gemini Resume Prompts: 30 Copy-Paste Prompts for Every Part of Your Resume
- Updated
- 16 min read
The best ChatGPT or Gemini resume prompt tells the AI who to act as, gives it your real details and the job description, says exactly what format you want back, and forbids it from inventing anything, for example: 'Act as an Indian recruiter. Rewrite these 4 duties as resume bullets for a Sales Executive role, starting each with an action verb, and don't add numbers I haven't given you.' Below are 30 copy-paste prompts for every part of your resume, a simple prompt formula, the mistakes to avoid, and how to keep your personal details safe while you use them.
How to use AI prompts for your resume safely
ChatGPT, Gemini and similar chatbots are good at rewording, shortening and structuring text. They are not good at knowing what you actually did. Treat them as an editor, not as the author of your career history, and follow a few ground rules:
- Keep personal data out of public chatbots. Leave out your phone number, home address, email, date of birth, Aadhaar, PAN and bank details. The AI doesn't need them to improve your bullets; add them yourself at the end. Chats may be stored and, depending on your settings, used to improve the service.
- Never let the AI add metrics you can't prove. Chatbots happily write 'increased sales by 40%' even when you never mentioned sales figures. An interviewer can ask about any number on your resume, so every figure must be one you can explain.
- Verify every fact. Check job titles, dates, company names, tools, certifications and CGPA line by line. AI sometimes swaps a tool you used for a more popular one or adds a skill you don't have.
- Give it the real job description. Tailored output beats generic output. Paste the job post, not just the job title.
- Edit the final draft in your own words. Remove phrases you would never say in an interview, and keep the language simple and specific.
Replace names with placeholders before pasting: 'Company A', 'College B', 'Client C'. You can put the real names back in your resume builder afterwards.
The resume prompt formula
Almost every good resume prompt has the same five parts. If a prompt gives you a weak answer, the missing part is usually the context or the constraints.
| Part | What to write | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Who the AI should act as | 'Act as a recruiter who hires freshers for IT services companies in India.' |
| Context | Your target job, experience level and situation | 'I'm a 2026 B.Com graduate applying for Accounts Executive roles in Pune.' |
| Input | Your real details, pasted below the instructions | 'Here are my internship duties: [paste]' or '[paste job description]' |
| Format | Exactly what you want back | 'Give 5 bullets, each under 25 words, starting with an action verb.' |
| Constraints | What it must not do | 'Use only facts I've given. Don't invent numbers, tools or employers. Use Indian English.' |
Act as [role, e.g. an experienced recruiter for (industry) in India]. I am [your situation: fresher / X years in (field)] applying for [target job title]. Task: [what you want, e.g. rewrite my bullets / write a summary]. Format: [number of lines or bullets, word limit, tone]. Rules: Use only the facts I give you. Do not invent numbers, tools, employers or certifications. If something important is missing, ask me questions first. My details: [paste your details here]
In every prompt below, replace the text in square brackets with your own details. The line 'If something is missing, ask me questions first' is worth keeping in all of them: it stops the AI from filling gaps with guesses.
Prompts for your headline, summary and objective
Act as a recruiter in India. Write 5 one-line resume headlines for me for the role of [target job title]. Use this pattern: Role | Experience | Top 3 skills | One proof point. Use only these facts: [degree, years of experience, key skills, one real achievement]. Keep each under 20 words.
Write a 3-line professional summary for my resume. Target role: [job title]. My experience: [years] years in [industry/function]. Main skills: [skills]. Two real achievements: [achievement 1], [achievement 2]. Start with my job title and years of experience. No 'hardworking', 'passionate' or 'dynamic'. Maximum 60 words.
I am a fresher with a [degree, e.g. B.Com 2026] from [college/university type]. I am applying for [job title] roles. My relevant skills are [skills], and my best project or internship was [one line]. Write 3 different career objectives of 2–3 lines each. Each must name the target role and one skill, and say how I can help the employer. Avoid generic lines like 'challenging environment' or 'reputed organisation'.
Write a 3-line resume summary for someone returning to work. Facts: I worked as [role] for [years] years until [year], then took a break for [reason: exam preparation / family / health / higher studies]. Since then I have [course, certification or freelance work]. I am now applying for [target role]. Be honest and positive, mention the gap briefly without apologising, and focus on skills that match the new role.
Shorten this resume summary to under 50 words without losing the job title, years of experience or the two strongest results. Remove filler words and clichés. Give me 2 versions. Summary: [paste your summary]

Prompts for experience and achievement bullets
This is where AI helps most. Most Indian resumes list duties ('Responsible for handling customer calls'); recruiters want results ('Resolved 40+ customer calls a day…'). These prompts turn one into the other without making things up.
Act as a resume writer. Rewrite these job duties as achievement-focused resume bullets for a [target role] application. Start each bullet with a strong action verb, keep each under 25 words, and show the result or purpose of the work. Use only the facts given; where a number would help but I haven't provided one, write [add number] instead of guessing. My role: [job title] at [Company A], [dates] Duties: [paste duties, one per line]
I want to add real numbers to my resume bullets. Don't write the bullets yet. First, ask me 8–10 short questions about my work as [job title] that would help me find measurable results, such as volume, time saved, team size, targets, accuracy or customers handled. After I answer, rewrite my bullets using only my answers. My current bullets: [paste bullets]
Replace weak openings like 'Responsible for', 'Worked on', 'Helped with' and 'Handled' in these bullets with specific action verbs. Don't change the facts or add new claims. Use a different verb for each bullet. Bullets: [paste bullets]
I did a [duration] internship as a [role] at [Company A]. Here is what I did, in my own words: [paste notes]. Turn this into 3–4 resume bullets for a fresher applying to [target role]. Mention the tools I used. If I haven't given a result for a task, describe the purpose of the task instead of inventing an outcome.
Proofread these resume bullets. Fix grammar and spelling, use past tense for past jobs and present tense for my current job, make the style consistent, and remove personal pronouns like 'I' and 'my'. Show the corrected bullets only, then list what you changed. Bullets: [paste bullets]
My resume is slightly over one page. Shorten each of these bullets by about a third without removing numbers, tools or results. Then tell me which 2 bullets are the least relevant for a [target role] job and could be removed. Bullets: [paste bullets]
If the AI's bullet contains a number you never gave it, delete the number or replace it with one you can prove. A smaller true number is always better than an impressive invented one.
Prompts for freshers: projects, skills and education
Write a resume project entry for a fresher applying to [target role]. Project: [name]. What it does: [one line]. My role: [solo / team of X, what I built]. Tech or tools: [list]. Any real result: [users, accuracy, marks, demo, GitHub link or none]. Format: project name and tools on one line, then 2–3 bullets under 25 words each. Don't add features I didn't build.
Organise these skills into a resume skills section for a [target role] job. Group them under 3–4 headings such as Technical Skills, Tools and Soft Skills. Remove duplicates, use the standard spelling of each tool (for example 'MS Excel', 'Tally Prime', 'Power BI'), and put the skills most relevant to this job description first. Don't add skills I haven't listed. My skills: [paste] Job description: [paste job description]
Turn these college activities into short resume bullets for an Achievements and Activities section. Focus on responsibility, teamwork and results. One line each. Activities: [e.g. NSS volunteer, organised college fest, class representative, sports, certificates]
I have written my work experience in Hindi (or Hinglish). Translate it into clear, professional Indian English suitable for a resume. Convert it into 3–5 bullets starting with action verbs. Keep the meaning exactly the same and don't add anything I haven't said. My notes: [paste your notes in Hindi or Hinglish]
Check this resume text for common Indian-English mistakes such as 'Myself [name]', 'doing my graduation', 'pass out', 'having knowledge of', 'I am having' and unnecessary words like 'kindly'. Suggest corrected versions that sound natural to a recruiter, without changing any facts. Text: [paste text]

Prompts for tailoring your resume to a job description
Tailoring is the single biggest improvement you can make, and it's tedious by hand. Run these prompts one after another for each job you care about.
List the hard skills, tools, qualifications and job-title keywords in this job description. Group them as Must-have and Nice-to-have, and write each keyword exactly as it appears in the post. Job description: [paste job description]
Compare my resume with this job description. Make a table with three columns: Keyword or requirement, Already in my resume (Yes/No), Where it could honestly go. Only suggest adding a keyword if my resume shows I actually have that skill. List any requirements I don't meet separately. Job description: [paste job description] My resume: [paste resume text without contact details]
Rewrite my resume summary (3 lines) and skills list so they match this job description. Use the job title from the post and include the most important keywords naturally, without keyword stuffing. Only use skills and experience that appear in my resume. Job description: [paste job description] My summary and skills: [paste]
Here are my experience bullets and a job description. Rewrite the bullets so the most relevant ones come first and use the same terms as the job description where they honestly describe my work. Keep every fact and number unchanged. Job description: [paste job description] Bullets: [paste bullets]
Act as an applicant tracking system and a recruiter screening resumes for [job title]. Review my resume text and report: (1) missing keywords from the job description, (2) section headings that are non-standard, (3) bullets without a clear result, (4) anything that looks vague, repetitive or exaggerated. Give a prioritised list of fixes. Don't rewrite the whole resume. Job description: [paste job description] Resume: [paste resume text without contact details]
You are a busy recruiter in India who spends 30 seconds on each resume for a [job title] opening. Read my resume and tell me: what you noticed first, what made you want to shortlist me, what made you hesitate, and the 3 changes that would most improve my chances. Resume: [paste resume text without contact details]
A chatbot can only guess how software reads your file. For a real check of your PDF or Word file, run it through the free ATS resume checker, which analyses the file in your browser and can match it against a job description. Our guide to an ATS-friendly resume explains what the checks mean.
Prompts for cover letters, Naukri and LinkedIn
Write a cover letter of under 250 words for the [job title] role at [company]. Use 3 short paragraphs: why this role, two relevant achievements from my resume, and a polite closing. Use simple Indian business English, not flowery language. Don't repeat my whole resume and don't invent facts about the company. Job description: [paste job description] My resume highlights: [paste 4–5 key points]
Write a short email (under 120 words) to apply for [job title], with my resume attached. Include a clear subject line, one line on who I am, two lines on why I fit, and a polite request to consider my application. Also write a 3-line version I can send on LinkedIn to ask an employee for a referral.
Write 5 Naukri resume headline options for me, each one line of about 15–25 words. Include my target role, experience level, top skills that recruiters search for, and one proof point. Target role: [job title]. Experience: [fresher / X years]. Skills: [list]. Achievement or certification: [one real item].
Write a Naukri profile summary of 4–5 lines for a [job title] with [experience]. Mention my key skills, domain, notable results and the kind of role I'm looking for, with preferred locations [cities] and notice period [period]. Use only these facts: [paste details].
Write 5 LinkedIn headline options (under 200 characters) for a [job title] focused on [area]. Mix role keywords with what I help employers achieve. Avoid buzzwords like 'guru', 'ninja' and 'visionary'. My skills and achievements: [paste].
Write a LinkedIn About section of 150–220 words in first person. Structure: what I do now, 2–3 things I'm good at with real examples, tools I use, and what I'm looking for next. Friendly but professional tone, short paragraphs. Use only facts from this resume: [paste resume text without contact details].
Act as an interviewer for a [job title] role. Based on my resume, ask me 10 questions an interviewer is likely to ask, including at least 3 about specific projects or numbers on my resume. After I answer each one, give short feedback. Resume: [paste resume text without contact details]
This is my old resume in a biodata style. Convert it into a modern resume outline for a [target role] job: headline, 3-line summary, skills, experience bullets, projects and education. Drop personal details like father's name, religion, marital status and date of birth. Keep all facts unchanged. Old resume: [paste text without phone, address or ID numbers]

Common mistakes when using ChatGPT or Gemini for a resume
- Copying the first answer. First drafts are generic. Ask for 2–3 versions, pick the best lines and edit them yourself.
- Accepting invented numbers or skills. Read every line and remove anything you can't explain in an interview.
- Pasting your full resume with contact and ID details into a public chatbot. Remove them first.
- Asking for 'a resume for a software engineer' with no details. Without your real information, the AI writes a template that looks like everyone else's.
- Over-polished language. Words like 'spearheaded', 'leveraged' and 'synergy' in every bullet sound machine-written. Plain, specific verbs read better.
- Keyword stuffing. Repeating job-description keywords without evidence doesn't fool recruiters. Use each keyword where it honestly describes your work.
- Skipping the format check. AI output pasted into a fancy two-column Word template can break when software reads it. Use a clean, ATS-friendly template and test the final file.
How to use these prompts inside Aucio Resume
You don't have to copy text back and forth between a chatbot and Word. Aucio Resume's free resume builder has AI built into the editor: it can rewrite a bullet, write or improve your summary, and tailor your resume to a pasted job description, right next to a live preview.
- Open the builder and fill in your details, or start from a resume example for your role. Your resume is stored in your own browser, with optional Google Drive sync.
- Use the built-in AI. It works free, with no API key and no sign-up, within a daily allowance.
- Prefer your own model? In AI settings, add your own key for Google Gemini, OpenAI, OpenRouter, Groq, DeepSeek, Together AI, Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible API. The key is stored only in your browser.
- Check every AI suggestion against the facts, exactly as you would with a chatbot.
- Download a text-selectable PDF or a Word (.docx) file, and test it with the ATS resume checker.
Even inside a resume builder, the rule is the same: AI improves the wording, you supply the facts. Add contact details, ID numbers and anything sensitive yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Is it okay to use ChatGPT to write my resume?
Yes, as long as the content is true and you check it. Using AI to reword bullets, fix grammar or tailor your resume to a job description is like asking a friend to edit it. The problem starts when the AI adds results, tools or responsibilities you don't have. Everything on your resume can come up in an interview, so keep only what you can explain and prove.
Will recruiters or ATS software detect that my resume was written by AI?
An ATS mainly reads your resume, extracts the details and matches them with the job; it isn't designed to reject a resume because AI helped write it. Recruiters, though, quickly notice generic, over-polished text that sounds like every other applicant. Edit AI drafts into your own words, add specific facts and real numbers, and make sure every line sounds like something you would say in an interview.
ChatGPT or Gemini: which is better for resumes?
Both can rewrite bullets, draft summaries and tailor a resume when given a clear prompt and your real details, so the quality of your prompt and your editing matters more than the brand. Try the same prompt in both and keep the version that sounds most like you. Whichever you use, check the facts, keep personal details out, and test the final file with an ATS checker.
Can I use these prompts for free?
Yes. ChatGPT and Gemini both offer free plans with usage limits at the time of writing, and every prompt here works with a free account. Aucio Resume's builder also includes free AI with no key or sign-up, within a daily allowance. If you already have an API key for Gemini, OpenAI or another supported provider, you can add it in the builder's AI settings.
What should I never paste into ChatGPT when making a resume?
Leave out your phone number, email, home address, date of birth, Aadhaar, PAN, passport and bank details, plus anything confidential from your employer such as client names or internal revenue figures. The AI doesn't need any of this to improve your wording. Replace names with placeholders like 'Company A', and add contact details yourself in the final resume.
Can ChatGPT make my resume ATS-friendly?
It can help with the words: matching keywords from the job description, using standard headings and writing clear bullets. It can't control how your file is built, which matters just as much. Use a simple template with real, selectable text, save it as PDF or Word, and run it through an ATS checker to see how software actually reads the file and which keywords are still missing.
