One Page Resume Format: Who Should Use It and How to Fit Your Resume on One Page
- Updated
- 8 min read
A one page resume is the right format for freshers and for most people with less than about 8–10 years of experience: use 0.5–0.75 inch margins, a 10–11 pt body font, a single clean layout and only the experience, skills and projects that match the job. If your resume spills onto a second page, cut old or irrelevant content and shorten bullets before you shrink the font. Below you'll find who should use one page, the exact layout settings, what to cut, a step-by-step method to shrink a two-page resume, and a sample one-page structure.
Should your resume be one page or two?
There is no law that says a resume must be one page, but recruiters skim, and a one-page resume forces you to show only your strongest, most relevant points. The right length depends on how much relevant experience you have, not on how much you can write.
| Your situation | Recommended length | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fresher, intern or campus placement | 1 page | Education, skills, 2–3 projects and an internship fit easily |
| 0–5 years of experience | 1 page | Your recent roles matter most; older details can be short |
| About 5–10 years of experience | 1 page if possible, 2 if every point is relevant | Shorten early roles to 1–2 bullets each |
| 10+ years, senior or management roles | 2 pages | Leadership, scale and several roles need space |
| Academic, research or teaching posts | Academic CV, often longer | Publications and research are expected in full |
| Government or PSU application | As the notification says | Follow the prescribed format and page limits |
A good test: if a line wouldn't make a recruiter more likely to call you for this job, it doesn't need the space. A focused one-page resume usually beats a padded two-page one, especially for freshers.
One page resume layout: margins, fonts and spacing
These settings keep a one-page resume readable on screen and in print. Stay within these ranges; going smaller makes the page look cramped and harder to read.
| Setting | Recommended | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Page size | A4 for India (Letter only if the employer is in the US) | Mixing sizes between PDF and print |
| Margins | 0.5–0.75 inch (about 12–19 mm) on all sides | Less than 0.4 inch; text too close to the edge |
| Body font size | 10–11 pt | Below 9.5 pt |
| Section headings | 12–14 pt, bold | Decorative or all-different heading styles |
| Your name | 18–24 pt | Huge banners that take a quarter of the page |
| Line spacing | 1.0–1.15 | Double spacing, or lines touching each other |
| Fonts | One clean font such as Calibri, Arial, Lato or a similar sans-serif | Script fonts or more than two typefaces |
| Bullets | 1–2 lines each, 3–5 per recent role | Paragraphs of 4–5 lines |
Section order for freshers: header, headline, career objective or summary, education, skills, projects, internships, certifications, achievements and activities.
Section order for experienced candidates: header, headline, summary, skills, work experience (most recent first), projects if relevant, education, certifications.
Put your name, phone, email, city and one link (LinkedIn, GitHub or portfolio) on one or two lines at the top. A tall, centred contact block wastes space you need for content.

What to cut or shorten to fit one page
| Item | What to do |
|---|---|
| Personal details (date of birth, father's name, religion, marital status) | Remove for private jobs; they aren't needed on a resume |
| Full home address | Keep only city and state |
| Objective full of generic phrases | Replace with 2–3 specific lines, or remove it if you have a good summary |
| Class X and XII marks (experienced candidates) | Remove once you have a degree and a few years of work |
| Old or unrelated jobs | Keep title, company and dates on one line, or drop them |
| Duty lists ('Responsible for…') | Keep the 3–5 bullets with the best results; delete the rest |
| Long skill lists | Keep skills that match the job; drop basics like 'MS Word' and 'Internet' |
| Hobbies and 'Strengths' | Remove, unless a hobby is directly relevant to the job |
| Declaration and 'Place/Date' lines | Optional on private-sector resumes; remove if you need the space |
| 'References available on request' | Remove; it's assumed |
| Photos, icons, skill bars and charts | Remove; they take space and can confuse ATS software |
How to shrink a 2-page resume to one page: step by step
- Read the job description and highlight what it asks for. Anything on your resume that doesn't support those points is a candidate for cutting.
- Delete the personal-details block, references line and hobbies. This alone often saves several lines.
- Cut older roles down to one line or 1–2 bullets. Your last 2–3 roles deserve most of the space.
- Shorten every bullet to 1–2 lines. Remove filler words like 'successfully', 'various' and 'in order to'.
- Merge short items: put certifications on one line separated by commas, and group skills under 2–3 headings.
- Watch for 'widows': a bullet or heading where only one or two words wrap onto a new line. Rewording these frees up whole lines.
- Only now adjust the layout: margins towards 0.5 inch, body font to 10–10.5 pt, slightly tighter section spacing.
- Export as PDF and check that nothing has spilled onto page 2 and the text is still easy to read.
If you have to go below 9.5 pt or under 0.4 inch margins to fit, you still have too much content. Cut another bullet instead.
Common one-page resume mistakes
- Shrinking the font instead of editing. Tiny text is hard to read and looks desperate. Cut content first.
- A second page with just a few lines. Either cut those lines or develop a properly filled second page if your experience justifies it.
- Cramming with tables and text boxes. Complex layouts can scramble the order of your text when software reads the file.
- Removing results to save space. Cut weak bullets, not the numbers in your strong ones.
- Using the same one-page resume for every job. The most relevant points change with each job description, so tailor what stays on the page.
- Saving as an image or scanned PDF. Recruiters and ATS software need real text they can search.

Frequently asked questions
Is a one-page resume better for freshers?
Yes. Freshers rarely have enough relevant experience to fill two pages with strong content, and recruiters screening campus or entry-level applications expect one page. Put education, skills, two or three projects, any internship and a few achievements on a single page. A focused one-page resume shows that you can prioritise, which is itself a useful signal for an entry-level role.
Can an experienced professional use a one-page resume?
Yes, and many people with up to about 8–10 years of experience should. Keep detailed bullets for your last two or three roles and reduce older jobs to one line each. If you have more than ten years, senior responsibilities or several important projects that all match the job, two full pages is fine. What matters is relevance, not the page count itself.
What font size should a one-page resume use?
Use 10–11 pt for body text, 12–14 pt for section headings and about 18–24 pt for your name. Pick one clean font, such as Calibri, Arial or Lato. Avoid going below about 9.5 pt for body text: if your resume only fits at that size, remove a bullet or an old role instead, because readability matters more than squeezing everything in.
What margins should I use for a one-page resume?
Margins of 0.5–0.75 inch, roughly 12–19 mm, on all sides work well on A4 paper. They leave enough white space for the page to look clean while giving you room for content. Avoid margins below about 0.4 inch, since text close to the edge looks cramped and can be cut off when printed.
Is a 2-page resume rejected by ATS?
No. ATS software reads all pages of a resume, so length alone doesn't cause a rejection. The one-page advice is mostly about recruiters, who spend limited time on each resume. If your second page has strong, relevant content, keep it. If it holds only a few lines, old jobs or personal details, cut it back to one page.
