Tips to make your nursing fresher (B.Sc / GNM) resume stand out

State your registration status clearly

Hospitals check registration before anything else. If you are registered, list 'Registered Nurse & Registered Midwife' with your council's name under Certifications. If it is still in process, write 'Registration applied' with the council's name rather than leaving it out, and keep the registration number for the application form.

Write internship rotations as experience

List your internship under Experience with the hospital, dates and the units you rotated through, such as medicine, surgery, ICU, OT and community health. Give numbers for patients per shift, cases in the OT and people screened at health camps.

List procedures you can do on day one

Junior staff nurse posts look for vital signs, medication administration, IV cannulation, catheterisation, Ryle's tube care, wound dressing and ECG recording. List only what you have done during postings, and be ready to describe each one in the interview.

Add BLS with the month you got it

Many staff nurse job posts ask for BLS. Write the certificate name, the issuing body and the month and year, and renew it before it lapses; American Heart Association BLS cards, for example, are valid for 2 years.

Follow the notification for government posts

Private hospitals expect a one-page resume. Government nursing officer posts, such as those filled through AIIMS NORCET or state health department exams, are selected through an exam and an online form, so follow the official notification. See the resume format for government jobs if a biodata-style format is asked for.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a nursing resume as a fresher?

Open with a 2-line summary naming your degree (B.Sc Nursing or GNM), your registration status and the job you want. Then list education with marks, your internship and clinical postings with patient numbers, clinical skills, and certificates such as BLS. Keep it to one page in a single column with standard headings so hospital applicant tracking systems can read it.

Can I apply for staff nurse jobs before my nursing council registration comes through?

You can apply, but you need to be registered with a State Nursing Council to work as a staff nurse, so many hospitals ask for it before you join. Write 'Registration applied' with the council's name on your resume and keep your mark sheets, internship completion certificate and degree or provisional certificate ready. Procedures and timelines vary by state, so check your State Nursing Council's website.

Is a B.Sc Nursing fresher resume different from a GNM fresher resume?

The format is the same. A B.Sc Nursing graduate lists the 4-year degree, a research project and the internship, while a GNM nurse lists the diploma and clinical postings. Both should show registration status, units worked in, procedures done under supervision and BLS. Check the eligibility line of each job post, since some ask for B.Sc Nursing and others also accept GNM.

What skills should I put on a nursing fresher resume?

Highlight procedures you have done during postings: vital signs, medication administration, IV cannulation, wound dressing, catheterisation, Ryle's tube feeding, ECG recording and blood sample collection. Add infection control, biomedical waste segregation, documentation and patient education, plus BLS. Use the exact terms from the job post, and see the staff nurse resume example for how these grow with experience.
